In the UK Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing is a process where electrical appliances
are routinely checked to see if they are safe to use, and pose no threat to the user and the
environment they are used in.

Portable Appliance Testing should be carried out at regular intervals on all electrical equipment
used by employees/employers or members of the public.

All electrical appliances with a mains plug need to be tested. Any appliance that can be
moved has to be maintained. The reason for this is that most of the damage occurs to the
power cord or the plug in appliances that are moved regularly.

This doesn’t just cover small portable appliances; equipment such as fridge freezers, washing
machines, microwaves and larger appliances also need to be tested.

Hand-held items such as drills and hairdryers can suffer damage more easily. For this reason
their testing will be more frequent than stationary items such as fridge freezers.

The code of practice for PAT testing defines various types of equipment/accessories to be
inspected and tested. All appliances will fall into one of these eight categories.

•Portable equipment/appliances
•Hand-held equipment/appliances
•Movable equipment/appliances
•Stationary equipment/appliances
•Fixed equipment/appliances
•Built-in equipment/appliances
•Information technology equipment
•Extension Leads
